Audiophiles
Prefer FLAC for their Data Compression Needs
The world of music has grown in leaps and bounds with new
forms of file formats for audio data compression being devised
and created quite frequently. One of the latest and most
efficient forms of audio codecs is the FLAC.
FLAC is the acronym for Free Lossless Audio Codec that is
basically a file format used for audio data compression. The
name of the file format itself gives an idea of why
audiophiles prefer this form of data compression.
FLAC is a lossless compression file format where you are
ensured that it does not remove any data bits from the data
file that is being compressed. This means that the resultant
file, after data compression is similar and equal to the data
file that is used before data compression.
This is the benefit FLAC has over other lossy compression file
formats like AAC, MP3 and Vorbis. Then there is the other
benefit that FLAC has, which is similar to the other methods
of available data compression methods.
While using FLAC for data compression, you find that there is
a reduction in requirements for bandwidth and storage of your
data in the file. This means that you get to store more in a
smaller space once your audio data is compressed with FLAC.
While compressing audio files to a smaller bandwidth, FLAC
ensures that the integrity of the audio source is maintained
for your better listening and audio pleasure. So digital
recordings in CDs that are encoded to FLAC can be decompressed
into similar copies of audio data in reduced file format.
Audiophiles prefer FLAC because of this.
In addition to FLAC offering integrity in data that is
compressed, the additional feature that attracts audiophiles
to FLAC for audio compression is its support for tagging,
cover art and fast seeking. In fact, when FLAC is used for
audio compression, in comparison to other file formats, the
speed of compression is rather fast in FLAC. This makes it
possible for a larger number of files being compressed in a
stipulated length of time.
Then of course, it is the fact that FLAC is free, and is an
open source, royalty-free file format that audiophiles prefer
this form of audio data compression. There is no need of
paying anything for FLAC, nor is there any need of seeking
permission from anyone for using it in your data compression.
There are no inhibitions in using FLAC as this is a file
format that is supported well by many software applications.
So no matter if the audiophile uses UNIX or Windows, they are
ensured of being able to compress their audio data with the
help of FLAC. Most of your household stereos, car stereos and
portable and handheld audio devices support FLAC. Though some
devices may not support FLAC, research is being conducted to
increase the number of FLAC enabled audio devices.
When you compare FLAC to zip, you find that zip usually
compresses a CD-quality audio file by 10 – 20%. However in the
case of your FLAC compression, you find that the compression
her is somewhere between 30 – 50% for most kinds of music.
However if you intend to compress voice recordings, you find
that the compression rates here are significantly greater.
So it can be seen that FLAC is basically the preferred choice
amongst owners of CDs and other media, who wish to preserve
all of their audio collections. So if the original media does
get lost, worn out or damaged, the FLAC copy of the audio
tracks promises that a duplicate of the data can be recovered
anytime for your continued listening pleasure.
